Maui County Councilman Riki Hokama To Hold Big Money Fundraiser In Honolulu

State Campaign Spending Commission (CSC) records show that Maui County Councilman Riki Hokama has held one fundraiser in the last two years. It was a modest $50/head deal at the Maui Beach Hotel on June 26, 2013. This isn’t surprising considering that the councilman who represents Lanai rarely has to campaign for office (he’s unopposed in his reelection bid this year).

But times are changing. Hokama–though he has no opponent going into the November election–has nonetheless scheduled two fundraisers. The first is the smaller of the two. Scheduled for Aug. 27, it’s a $100/head event at the Yokouchi Family Estate in Wailuku.

The second, which the CSC made public today, is a far more lavish affair. According to this fundraiser notice, Hokama is asking supporters to attend a dinner at Morton’s Steakhouse in Honolulu, which is just slightly outside his district (the fundraiser doesn’t list an address, but there’s just one Morton’s in Hawaii). The suggested contribution for the event: “$1,000/$2,000.”

Damn! Someone’s got ambitions that stretch far beyond the Maui County Council. In any case, Hokama’s most recent campaign finance report (filed July 8) says he currently has $37,503.42 in the bank.
